How to Compress Images for Instagram Without Losing Quality

Instagram re-compresses every photo you upload. Pre-optimise your images so they survive Instagram's compression and still look sharp.

Instagram compresses every image you upload — and if you do not prepare your photo correctly, the result can look blurry and dull. Here is how to pre-process your images so they look as sharp as possible after Instagram's compression.

Why Instagram Makes Your Photos Look Bad

Instagram recompresses images to reduce storage and bandwidth costs. The more heavily Instagram has to compress your image, the more quality is lost. Upload a correctly sized image at moderate file size and Instagram's compression is gentler — and the result looks much sharper.

The Right Dimensions for Instagram

  • Square post: 1080×1080px — use Instagram Square Resizer
  • Portrait post: 1080×1350px (4:5 — maximum portrait ratio allowed)
  • Landscape post: 1080×566px (1.91:1)
  • Story / Reels: 1080×1920px
  • Always upload at exactly 1080px width. Uploading at 4K forces Instagram to downsample and introduces softening.

The Right File Size for Instagram

Aim for 500KB–1MB — large enough to give Instagram quality source data, small enough to upload quickly. Compress to 500KB before uploading for the best results.

Format: JPG vs PNG on Instagram

Use JPG for photographs. Use PNG for graphics with text, sharp lines, and solid colours — Instagram preserves PNG better for these image types. Avoid WebP — Instagram's uploader still does not reliably handle WebP on all devices.

Colour Space: sRGB Is Critical

Instagram only displays images in sRGB colour space. If your photo uses Adobe RGB or ProPhoto RGB (common in professional cameras), the colours will look washed out. Export with sRGB colour profile before uploading.

Pre-Upload Checklist

1. Resize to 1080px wide for feed posts 2. Export as JPG with sRGB colour profile 3. Compress to 500KB–1MB for optimal quality 4. Upload over WiFi — Instagram applies less compression on faster connections
