Best Image Format for Printing in 2026: JPG, PNG, TIFF, or PDF?
Choosing the wrong image format for printing can result in blurry or colour-incorrect results. The right format for every type of print job.
The best format for printing depends on the type of print job — a home photo print, a commercial magazine spread, and a large-format banner all have different requirements. Here is how to choose correctly.
JPG: The Standard for Photo Printing
JPG is the most widely accepted format at photo labs, printing kiosks, and online print services. For prints up to A3 size viewed at normal distance, JPG at quality 90–95 from a modern camera produces excellent results.
TIFF: The Professional Standard
- TIFF is lossless — no data is discarded. It is the industry standard for:
- Print production workflows (offset printing, lithography)
- Large format printing where pixel-level quality matters
- Archival storage of original images
PNG: Good for Graphics and Text
- PNG is excellent for printing images with sharp edges, text, logos, and solid colours. Use PNG for:
- Printing a logo or illustration
- Printing a graphic with text
- Images with transparent areas
PDF: Best for Documents with Mixed Content
For anything that combines text and images (brochures, reports, business cards), PDF is the right choice. PDF preserves fonts, vector graphics, and images in a single file.
Resolution for Printing
- 300 DPI: Photo quality for all print sizes up to A3
- 150 DPI: Acceptable for posters viewed at distance
- 72–96 DPI: Screen only — prints will be blurry
- Use Image Resizer to set the correct pixel count. If your image is too low resolution, Image Upscaler can increase dimensions.
