What Is HEIC Format? iPhone Photos Explained
HEIC is Apple's default photo format — but most apps outside Apple's ecosystem cannot open it. Here is what HEIC is and how to deal with it.
If you have ever transferred iPhone photos to a Windows PC and found files with a .heic extension that nothing can open, you have encountered HEIC. Here is a plain-English explanation of what it is, why Apple uses it, and how to work with it.
HEIC: High Efficiency Image Container
HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. It is Apple's implementation of the HEIF standard (High Efficiency Image Format), developed by MPEG — the same organisation behind MP4 video. Apple started using HEIC as the default iPhone camera format with iOS 11 in 2017.
Why Apple Uses HEIC Instead of JPG
- HEIC achieves roughly 50% smaller file sizes than JPG at equivalent visual quality. A 4MB JPG photo can be stored as a 2MB HEIC with no visible quality difference. HEIC also supports features JPG does not:
- Live Photos (stores the video component)
- HDR image data
- Depth maps (Portrait Mode)
- Multi-frame images (burst shots stored in one file)
The Problem: Poor Compatibility
- HEIC is not widely supported outside Apple devices:
- Windows: Cannot open HEIC without installing the Microsoft HEIF Image Extensions
- Android: Cannot open HEIC natively in most gallery apps
- Web upload forms: Most websites do not accept HEIC files
- Email clients: Non-Apple mail clients may not display HEIC inline
- Older software: Photoshop, GIMP, and most apps require a plugin or update
- Convert HEIC to JPG for universal compatibility.
How to Convert HEIC to JPG
1. Open the HEIC to JPG converter 2. Select your .heic files 3. Download as JPG — runs entirely in your browser Batch conversion is supported. No account needed.
How to Prevent iPhone from Using HEIC
Go to Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. Your iPhone will now save photos as JPG. You will use slightly more storage, but photos will be compatible with all devices and apps.
